WCF’s – Groups G and H (Match 2)

France managed to blow it again, Henry’s early goal against South Korea should’ve been the start of a hammering. They took their foot off the gas though and the limited Koreans took advantage of a Barthez howler near the end to get a draw. France’s urgency late on must be frustrating to their fans, who watched them sit back on their lead for seventy minutes. Viera’s first half header was at least a yard over the line and, once again, the Korean’s benefit from an horrendous refereeing decision. Hmmm… remember the Spain and Italy matches in 2002? Their fans were amazing though (better than the Poles and Germans), though it seems they sing and dance all the time, with complete disregard to what’s happening on the pitch. Switzerland‘s 2-0 win over Togo could’ve been more comfortable, the Togolese had two decent penalty claims. That said, they look good for the second round with a decent young team and Frei in form. The French should beat the Africans and make it themselves, leaving the stodgy Koreans on the outside, looking in. Here’s hoping Advocaat gets what’s coming to him. Ukraine bounced back with a deseved 4-0 hammering of Saudi Arabia, to erase their loss by the same score in the first match. The Saudis were terrible and could’ve lost be more. Sheva got his goal, but the whole team was impressive, lending their excuses after the Spain loss (the heat, poor refereeing decisions) more weight than before. The Spanish came from a goal down to beat Tunisia 3-1 but looked vulnerable to counter attacks. Their ball retention was excellent though and they seem to have game breakers in Torres, Jaoquin, Villa and veteran Raul. Tunisia played OK, but their keeper had a howler for the second goal. The two European sides can consider themselves decent though; Spain are through and Ukraine need only take apoint from Tunisia to join them.
