WCF’s – Groups G and H (Match 3)

France finally got their act together, beating Togo 2-0. Viera and Henry’s goals got them into second spot and an interesting tie with Spain. The French have enough good players to upset the odds in that match, but they’ll have to make vast strides. Switzerland‘s 2-0 win over South Korea won them the group and knocked the Koreans out. I’ve said it before, but the Swiss are probably two years away from being a top side. I think they’ll struggle against the Ukraine, who needed Shevchenko’s penalty to beat a stubborn Tunisia side 1-0. I think the matchup suits them in the second round though. The Spanish also won 1-0, against Saudi Arabia, but they rested several top players for the match, having already qualified. Juanito’s goal may put him in the reckoning for the France game. Spain, with a history of underachievement at the Finals, seem to have a new attitude under coach Arragones. The lack of deference to Barcelona and Real Madrid when the squad was picked seems to have almost eliminated the rival factions that let Spain down in the past. They will need to continue with this unity, to dispatch France.
