If I were England manager…

…heaven forbid, I could win today, without risking any injured players;

GK – Traffic Cone (Israel won’t attack much)

LB – Ashley Cole

CB – Rio Ferdinand

CB – John Terry

RB – Micah Richards

LM – Stewart Downing

CM – Gareth Barry

CM – Joe Cole

RM – Shaun Wright-Phillips

ST – Michael Owen

ST – Andy Johnson

Despite injuries, there is plenty of depth on the bench. Obviously,Carrick would be an option if midfield became bogged down, with the useless-lump-formerly-known-as Heskey available to put high balls into. Defoe is a tailor-made replacement for Owen. Both fullbacks are quick enough to get down the wings and let the wingers drift inside. Being England manager is a piece of pish.

Of course, despite numerous friendlies, they’ve never tried Cole in his preferred position of playmaker. Aime Jacquet famously said, after winning the 1998 World Cup that he could win it coaching an England side based around Cole and (as it turned out) the majority of the current squad (and this was before anyone had heard of Wayne Rooney).

I suppose all Scots should thank God that I’m not England manager. Or Scholari, or Hiddink, or Wenger…
